Women’s Centre, Colombo: The Women’s Centre was established at Tudella in Ja-Ela in August 1982 to protect women, rights of women and rights of women workers. The Women’s Centre has advocated the right of women to live free from violence and from labour exploitation. In this context the Women’s Centre has contributed to strengthening the struggle of Polytex Garment workers and protected the Tamil workers from the Ekala area in Ja-Ela who became helpless during the racist clashes that festered Sri Lanka in 1983. Since then the Women’s Centre has opened a branch “Women Workers’ Shelter” in Jayawardhanapura in Katunayake to give strength to women workers from the Katunayake Free Trade Zone in their protection of labour rights.
