Are the canons of modern film criticism unable to appreciate melodramatic performance forms? Can there be standardised parameters for reviewing diverse national cinemas? Who sets those benchmarks? Does culture influence film criticism? Why do Bollywood stars have cult-like followings? Why do Indian films sing and dance? ...and other questions exploring ‘an Indian way of filmmaking’, shape the interviews-driven drama in this thoughts-provoking anecdotal visual textbook that sings in 10 languages; and speaks in one. 12 international scholars, critics, writers, curators, actors and filmmakers from two continents come together to discuss the universal pleasures of Indian cinema and debate some fundamental misconceptions around the understanding of its ‘unique’ narrative attributes and ‘dramatic’ styles of storytelling.
The panel discussion will be led by Talat Ahmed and David Sorfa (UoE)
