A Roof of One’s Own: Houses, hierarchies, and the fragilities of women’s access to property in Kerala, India

What does it mean for women to inherit property? What are the factors that jeopardise women’s control over property? Through a study of the Thiyyas, concentrated in North Kerala and with a history of matriliny, this paper shows that contrary to popular perception matriliny did not transform into patriliny.
