Profile

I am a discursive psychologist with primary research interests in interactional practices of categorization and negotiation of identities. I examine how individuals make claims to membership in social group based categories like those on race, gender, religion, caste, or nationality and others made for ad-hoc in and for the interaction. I focus on the consequences of these for exclusion. Much of my work focuses on interactions in South Asian contexts with the aim to develop a body of knowledge rooted in the 'Global South'.

I am currently examining a) issues of racialization and negotiation of racism in diverse settings: the United States, Ireland, UK, and India. b) Gender categorizations in debates on abortion in Ireland and the United States. c) Constructing citizenship in re-territorializing India as a Hindu Rashtra. d) Socio-political categories on Indian social media.
