Pankaj Pankaj is the International Dean for South Asia and a Professor in the School of Engineering. In his dean’s role he is engaged in enhancing University’s partnerships in South Asia. He initiated discussions with the Government of Gujarat which led to the establishment of Gujarat Biotechnology University in partnership with the University of Edinburgh. His research expertise is computational mechanics. He has employed this expertise in the area of earthquake disaster mitigation – both for non-engineered building structures in South Asia and for engineered structures such as nuclear power plants and dams constructed in India. His current research exploits computational mechanics to solve real clinical problems in the area of orthopaedics. He has had international research collaborations which have resulted in joint funding and publications. He has been a Senior Fellow of Collegium Helveticum (Zurich). He is also the Director of the Edinburgh India Institute and a trustee of the Edinburgh South Asian Association.
