Profile

I have an interdisciplinary background in sociology, anthropology and public health. I work on health and social inequalities in the UK and Pakistan, with a focus on migration, 'race'/ethnicity, gender, and the management of health and illness in families. I also have a growing interest in areas where the medical and the legal coincide. My work is threaded by a concern with intersectional inequalities and the social determinants of health and gender violence. My major projects to date have addressed: 1) racial/ethnic and class-based inequalities in non-communicable disease and debility in the UK; 2) marital conflicts and mental ill health associated with gender inequalities and gender violence in minoritised South Asian families in the UK; and 3) intersectional inequalities in maternal and child health in Pakistan, specifically how social locations differentiate women’s reproductive and caring experiences. Most recently, 4) I have been working on COVID-19 in the UK and, with colleagues from the University of Oxford, tracing how people's experiences of infection and recovery have been shaped by their social positioning.
