Profile

Alan Duncan is an agricultural scientist with particular interests in improved feeding of livestock in support of smallholder farmer livelihoods in Africa, South Asia and Southeast Asia. Alan has a joint position between University of Edinburgh’s Global Academy of Agriculture and Food Systems and the International Livestock Research Institute. His work in South Asia has focused on India and Pakistan. In India he has been researching smallholder dairy production and the institutional barriers to enhanced nutrition of dairy cattle, particularly in Uttarakhand. He worked extensively in the Northern Areas of Pakistan in the 1990’s characterizing livestock production systems in collaboration with the Aga Khan Rural Support Programme.
