Our research explores how far the growth of secondary schooling is changing
patterns of social inequality and social exclusion in rural western Uttar
Pradesh (UP). We are concerned with class, caste, community and gender
dimensions of inequality and exclusion. The Economic and Social Research
Council [grant number R000238495], Ford Foundation and Royal Geographical
Society funded aspects of our research and Swaleha Begum, OP Bohra, Shaila
Rais, Chhaya Sharma and Manjula Sharma provided research assistance in western
UP.
