Professor Emeritus of Sanskrit, now an honorary fellow of the Centre. He was the first Convenor of the Centre for South Asian Studies (1989-93) and the first head of the newly inaugurated School of Asian Studies (1998-99). His main research interests lie in the two Sanskrit epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, with his latest book being on them. In addition, he and his wife collaborated in the compiling of the Epic and Puranic Bibliography published in 1992 as part of the Tubingen Purana Project; he has also catalogued part of the Chandra Shum Shere Collection in the Bodleian Library, Oxford. In April 2000 he was elected Secretary General of the International Association of Sanskrit Studies.
